Don’t Stop Protecting Your Data – Just Because You Are On Holiday

The holidays are here, suitcases are packed and ready to go. It’s time to switch off for a week or two, unwind and let our brains turn to mush and not think about the outside world. That’s what we’d like but it’s not always that simple.

Whilst we are off on our holidays those horrible criminals are still thinking of ways to cause us problems, separate us from our money and steal our data.

So here are three thingsto consider before you go away, which if you do, should give you some comfort.

Social Media– We love to post photos and comments at the airport, the beach, letting people know what we are up to on our holidays but it’s an open invitation to people that are watching that your home is empty, how long your away for, when you’re coming back. Chances are if you’re posting this then there’s plenty of other information available about you online to do some damage.

I know what you’re thinking, my friends wouldn’t do that to me and you are probably right, but do you know all their friends and their friends and so on. It’s not worth the risk, share the photos and stories when you get home!

Internet Access– Like many of you I have kids and a partner who can at times struggle to go for more than 5 minutes without wanting to access the internet, easiest thing is the free
Wi-Fi in bars, restaurants and hotels. As with any of these back at home as well, it’s extremely easy to set a mobile Wi-Fi network up to view your internet traffic and capture your details and because we are on holiday, our guards are sometimes down. The easiest way to protect yourselves is by using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) which can be downloaded from either iTunes or Google Play.

Think About What You Share-The third and final one is to be conscious of the conversations you have and the information you discuss with people you meet on holiday. Chances are there might be some alcohol involved, guards are down and you don’t know these people very well. What you say could be perfectly innocent on both sides but could also be used at a later stage for no good.

So keep safe, but enjoy your holidays, just be aware of what could happen and be happy with the decisions you make knowing the downside.

Safe Disposal of your old IT Equipment

When disposing of your old IT equipment, you need to consider more than just the recycling of materials – as your confidential, private data will have been held on the internal storage and could still be accessible.

With a huge focus in the media about the revised Data Protection Rules that take effect from May 2018, it is imperative that you know where your data is and if that data needs to be removed or wiped, it is done so correctly.

There criminals out there who are looking for mistakes and vulnerabilities within organisations, no matter how large or small. Data Protection breaches are taken very seriously and carry hefty fines.

GDPR SME's Is your Business Prepared?

The Telegraph has recently published an article in regards to the current Data Protection Act being replaced by the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), in May 2018.
The GDPR brings many new rules in regards to the storage and handling of personal data and very tough punishments for those who fail to comply.
Based on how easy it is to now collect data thousands of SMEs store, move and access data on a day to day basis. Personal data is constantly used within companies for sales, marketing and CRMs.
One of the biggest changes that will affect SMEs isconsentas under the new regulations companies must keep a record of how and when an individual gave their consent to store and use their personal data. Consent will need to come from an agreement and the company will have to be able to show a clear audit trail of how and when the consent was given.
If the individual withdraws this consent, it will not just be a case of removing them from a list, their details must be permanently deleted. The new ruling gives individuals the right to be totally forgotten.
For a lot of companies new procedures will need to be put in place in order to be compliant come May 2018. They will need to know where their data is stored and have a clear process in place for removal of this data in order to avoid a breach.

At CSCM we fully believe in working with school leavers in order to offer on the job training while they are continuing their education. Again this year we have taken on two new apprentices but are conscious that a lot of small businesses do not consider this.

We have sourced some facts about Apprenticeships with the help of LMPQ, some thinking points for potential employers who may not have considered an apprentice:

  • Over 100,000 employers offer apprenticeship places in over 190 job roles across a wide range of sectors
  • 88% of employers who employ apprentices believe that apprenticeships lead to a more motivated and satisfied workforce
  • 83% of employers who employ apprentices rely on their apprenticeships programme to provide the skilled workers that they need for the future
  • One in five employers are hiring more apprentices to help them through the tough economic climate
